Sensemaya fuses hot Latin dance rhythms with the cool sophistication of jazz improvisation. Their repertoire includes funkified interpretations of classic salsa to originals written in the revolutionary timba style of Cuba. Their own uniquely fresh Latin jazz compositions include a variety of styles from Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Brazil and the Dominican Republic. While Sensemaya can cater to the intimate jazz listener, their true purpose is to get audiences out of their seats and on to the dance floor. Sensemaya was created by David Gleason after he returned to Albany from Tufts University with a degree in Ethnomusicology. Calling upon the Capital Regions finest musicians the group set out to bring the rich sound of Cuban and Puerto Rican rhythms to local audiences. As their own blend of salsa, funk, and jazz emerged, Sensemaya soon became one of the region's most sought after acts. Sensemaya has since played major festivals and concert series including the Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival, the Albany Latin Festival, Alive at Five, Schenectady Summer Night, Rock 2 Rebuild, Saratoga's Hat's Off and Final Stretch, Scotia's Freedom Park, Troy's Collar City Live, Schenectady's Jazz on Jay, Colonie's Concerts in the Barn, the Amsterdam Latin Festival and the Shawnee Mountain Caribbean Festival in Pennsylvania. Additionally they have been featured on WAMC's Laurel Masse Jazz Show, at various colleges, weddings, corporate and government events, the Saratoga Race track, and at other local clubs including Gafney's, Justin's, Chameleon on the Lake, 9 Maple, 677 Prime, Thirteen, Brindisi's, the Troy Daily Grind, The Stockade Inn, Barcelona, Mare and Daisy Baker's . They were also voted Best Latin Jazz 2005 by the Metroland Reader's Poll. Sensemaya is available for shows including weddings, and corporate events. They can perform as danceable salsa ensemble of six or more to a small cocktail ensemble of two or three. We encourage you to explore our photos, biographies, recordings, and promotional information.
